Celebrating Gratitude: Thanksgiving in Canada!

Introduction:

As we approach the second Monday in October, Canadians from coast to coast prepare to come together with family and friends to celebrate one of our country’s most beloved holidays: Thanksgiving. At Global College of Business and Technology, we believe in fostering a sense of
community and gratitude among our students, instructors, and staff. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the history and significance of Thanksgiving in Canada, as well as share some fun facts and traditions associated with this special day.

A Brief History of Thanksgiving in Canada:

While many people associate Thanksgiving with American traditions, Canada has its own unique history of celebrating the harvest season. The first recorded Thanksgiving in Canada took place in 1578, when English explorer Martin Frobisher and his crew arrived in what is now
Newfoundland. They held a feast to give thanks for their safe arrival, marking the beginning of a long-standing tradition.

Modern-Day Celebrations:

Today, Thanksgiving in Canada is a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives, spend quality time with loved ones, and enjoy a delicious meal together. Many Canadians celebrate by hosting or attending a traditional turkey dinner, often accompanied by stuffing, mashed
potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Others may choose to volunteer at a local food bank or soup kitchen, giving back to their communities and showing appreciation for the abundance in their lives.

Fun Facts and Traditions:

  • Many families incorporate outdoor activities into their Thanksgiving celebrations, such as hiking, apple picking, or playing football.
  • The most popular side dish at Canadian Thanksgiving tables is mashed potatoes, followed closely by stuffing and cranberry sauce.
  • In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October.
  • In some parts of Canada, particularly in the Maritime provinces, Thanksgiving is also known as “Action de Grâce” a French term meaning “action of thanks”.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving at Global College of Business and Technology, we are reminded of the importance of gratitude, community, and compassion. We hope that this special day brings joy and warmth to your heart, and that you take a moment to reflect on the things that
bring you happiness and appreciation.

Happy Thanksgiving from Global College of Business and Technology!
